It cannot be said that he ignored events from history or took a specific view on them; however he created his own history with the lives of Hester Prynne, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, their resulting daughter, Pearl, and the lives of those they touched. Historically, in an effort to determine whether Hawthorne’s descriptions are accurate, one can look at the values of the Puritans as a basis for study. Beyond the social, cultural, and actions of the characters, however, â€Å"The Scarlet Letter† leaves much to be desired for historical accuracy. In truth, Hawthorne based the story upon his own cultural times, placing his characters into a time period in which he knew prejudices against sin would make a marvelous tale. By his time, the Salem witch trials were well known, and his background in Puritanical beliefs would have made inserting characters into that background an easy feat. Hawthorne, it can be decided, focuses on the story within the backdrop—how the characters themselves shape history—and seems unconcerned with literal historical events within his tale. As to my opinion about historical events, no, Hawthorne did not change them. What he did was to make me see, very clearly, how easy it is for one person to become the focal point of sin within a community. To paraphrase Gary Scharnhorst’s â€Å"The Critical Response to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘The Scarlet Letter’, the word â€Å"adultery† is never actually used within â€Å"The Scarlet Letter,† yet a reader understands very clearly by the attitudes of the characters that Hester has committed the worst of all sins and has to be physically, outwardly punished for all time. The one thing that separates humans from the other animals of this world is the ability to choose between right and wrong. Animals are unable to make this rationalization. But, as Hawthorne has so adeptly shown, the choice is often a non-issue when swept away by the driving force of a larger crowd. On their own, humans can choose between right and wrong without consequence. In a group, a dissenter would be punished just as Hester was—marked publically for all to see. In this, Hawthorne is a master. The fact that he based his work in a well-known time period serves no greater purpose than for dramatic effect. His story would be the same if set in any other time period, with any other sin. Imagine if Hawthorne had written about a young servant girl during the reign of King Henry VIII. She could have born his child or spoken out against Catholicism and been given the same fate. Her fate probably would have been death, and in his punishment, Hawthorne was delicate—if anything he is historically inaccurate here. Witches and women of less than perfect repute were often put to death, not degraded by wearing a public symbol. In this he was kind, but from the outcome of the story we know why. He wanted Pearl to grow up through the castigation of her mother and still prosper in the end. The object of sin became the reason for Hester’s being, and a powerful symbol of a different kind of justice. A pearl, after all, within a dark sea that appears to be full of tragedy and strife, can still become a most beautiful jewel. Truly, â€Å"The Scarlet Letter† is a work of fiction. The characters are not real and their lives did not play out in known history; however, what Hawthorne presents, and which I feel is more important, is what could have happened. The moral of his work is not to retell an unfortunate act, but to show the nature of human character and how there is a moment where a choice must be made between good and evil. The fact that Hawthorne was raised with Puritanical beliefs only seems to lend more weight to this theme. And this is what I enjoyed about â€Å"The Scarlet Letter. † Hawthorne’s life fills the pages of his work with a profound message for humanity. The scenes could have played out in any society, based upon any sin. Hawthorne even leaves a bit for the reader to infer about humanity with the final line of the book, â€Å"on a field, sable, the letter A, gules [or, is stained red]† (Hawthorne, 201). From this, we can ask: â€Å"does the scarlet letter stand for sin or for cleansing? Is the epitaph a word of despair or hope? In what direction did Hawthorne intend to lead our thoughts? If asked, he would have said, ‘read out of your own heart’ † (Scharnhorst, 131). And this, I think, is what readers should remember when studying his work. Being human means making choices based not only on who we are, but who others around us are and how they choose. Following the crowd, while most do so without thinking, is not always the best choice and does not, as in the case of Hester, serve the right kind of justice. In its mandate for Palestine, the League of Nations integrated a principle that established a Jewish national home under the 1917 Balfour Declaration (Sabel 410). The League of Nations under the mandate explicitly called for the establishment of the Jewish national home and gave recognition to the self-determination of the Jewish people in Palestine. The principle stated that the mandate would ensure that it placed the region under appropriate political, governance and economic environment that will facilitate the establishment of the Jewish national home. This appeared as the beginning of the conflict that persists in the Middle East to date. In 1938, Nazi Germany was murdering the Jews in Europe systematically through state-sponsored genocide. Many countries refused to accept ships carrying Jewish refugees from docking and had to return them to Europe. The emotional appeal attached to individuals suffering led to an international support for the establishment of the Jewish national home. This was done in the Western Palestine. The east of Jordan River was not part of the Jewish allocation. There was growing tension between Arabs and Jews by 1947. Based on this, the British mandate returned the mandate to the United Nation s. The UN assembly later recommended the partitioning of Western Palestine into a Jewish state, Arab state and Jerusalem (Han and Halim 618). In 1948, the Jewish community declared independence as the State of Israel. The move was rejected by Arab states including Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon who waged war against the creation of the Jewish state. As the Jewish state progressively gained acceptance in the region, it signed peace treaties that recognized borders between Israel, Egypt and Jordan. This appeared as a logical move given that nothing other the peace treaties could end such conflicts. However, the stature of West Bank remained precarious. The signing of peace treaties with other states recognizes the borders of Israel as former demarcations by the British mandate (Shamir and Shikaki 187). The growing population and resource interests by Israel in the West Bank region made Israel to enter gradually into Gaza Strip and adjacent areas in later days. During the era o f British mandate, the whole of Palestine west of River Jordan was assigned the area where the Jewish national home would be established. According to the UN 1947 Partition plan, the Eastern part and the Gaza Strip would form a sovereign Arab state. After the 1948 war, this area and East Jerusalem fell under Jordanian rule. The entire area was consequently incorporated into Jordan under the name West Bank (of Jordan). The 1967 war was triggered between Israel and neighbor states namely Syria, Jordan and Egypt when Egypt imposed a blockade on the Strait of Tiran. This closed the Gulf of Aqaba. By the time the war ended, Israel had acquired the control of the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, West Bank, Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula. Successive Israel administration rarely gives an indication of returning the region to the original state of Jordan despite multiple interventions by interested parties. The UN Security Council intervened through the adoption of Resolution 242. The reso lution was non-binding and Israel took advantage of the provisions therein. The resolution called for an amicable solution, establishing just and lasting peace for the region. However, Israel was to withdraw from the recently occupied territories. All parties were to respect the sovereignty, integrity and political independence of every state. People in the region were entitled to peaceful co-existence according to the resolution. Irrespective of the pressure by adjacent states for Israel to vacate the region, Israel forces continue to oppress Palestinians. It administers the region according to the international rules of occupied territory. The Palestinian population has been decreasing in the occupied territory with Israel not showing any foreseeable ceding of the territory. Thus, the solution to the Middle East conflict will be based on mutual agreement between Israel and neighbors who Israel demands must recognize its borders as was demarcated by the British mandate (Frederiksen 42). Conclusion The Kingdom of Jordan, which is an Arab state, was created in what was formerly referred to as the Eastern Palestine. A Jewish state was created in part of Western Palestine. The area between the two states called the West Bank remains undetermined. The biggest population amongst the West Bank occupants is the Palestinian Arabs. The resolution of the Middle East conflict shall only be realized when Israel and Palestine lay aside their hard stances and hold peace talks. Although the West Bank was included in the partition for the Jewish national home, Israel will have to relinquish any legal claims on the West Bank. On its part, Palestine will have to agree to the Jewish right of self-government in the State of Israel. You'll often see opposite answers in detail questions because these questions are the most straigtforward, so most people don't focus too much on them. Read the questions carefully to avoid falling into this trap, and check your answers at the end of the section! Category 3: Concept Jumble This is an answer choice that incorporates concepts from the text but does so in a slightly confused order or relationship so that they don’t actually make sense as an answer to the question. Let's use this question as an example: The word miracle in line 52 refers most specifically to the way in which: A. brain function disorders are cured.B. unique handicaps are compensated for.C. different areas of the brain work together.D. the creative potential of disease is revealed. Here's the sentence from the passage that includes line 52: "The miracle is how they all cooperate, are integrated together, in the creation of a self." In the context of the passage, "they" refers to different areas of the brain; therefore, for this question, C is the correct answer. An example of a concept jumble answer would be D, "the creative potential of disease is revealed". This is because the main point of the passage is the fact that certain diseases reveal the creative potential of the brain to rewire itself. Even though D doesn't make sense as an answer to this specific question, it is still a concept that is discussed in the passage. Why is this a dangerous option? Much like opposite answer choices, concept jumble answer choices count on you rushing and not reading carefully enough. You might remember something being mentioned in the text and go with an answer that contains that same concept but not read closely enough to realize the answer doesn’t actually make sense. These types of answer choices are common on big picture questions that ask about the main points of passages. This is when it's easiest to confuse you because the answer has to cover broader themes or connect complex ideas. Again, read carefully! These lines read "That may not seem like much, but when talking about a planet billions of years old, it adds up." This refers to a statement earlier in the paragraph that comets bombarding the Earth's atmosphere would produce enough water vapor to add an inch of water to the planet's surface every 10,000 years. The real answer to this question is A because lines 64-66 serve mainly to put the earlier numbers in perspective. An example of a plausible interpretation answer would be D, "provide readers with a sense of how old the planet really is". The sentence does give a sense of how old the planet really is, so that could plausibly be its purpose in the paragraph. However, if you read closely, answer choice A is much more logical as a rationale for the placement of the sentence. Why is this a dangerous option? This is probably the MOST dangerous type of wrong answer choice for students who aren't prepared for the ACT.If you’re looking at a passage on the test the same way you would look at something you’re reading in English class, it's easy to get trapped by an answer that’s plausible but not objectively true. These options are especially problematic (and prevalent) with inference and function questions, because you are being asked to look beyond the literal details of the text. In this report you will find that descriptive research is done to solve this problem. To solve this problem I did a questionnaire survey on the customers of Oman Air. The questionnaire survey was completely based on random sampling. The questionnaire is attached in the appendix. Basically the research is done to make an improvement in Oman Air so that their level of customers will reach to the previous level. Field/Data Collection I am considered as the market researcher of Sirius Marketing and Social Research Ltd. Here Oman Air has assigned me as their market researcher to find a solution of their problem which is nowadays the airline company is not getting that much response in their issuing of tickets. Sirius Marketing and Social Research Ltd. is taking Tk 200,000 for doing this research from Oman Air and the company is willing to pay the money to the research company on the basis of the companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s goodwill. To do the research I am using primary research method and doing qualitative questionnaire survey using random sampling. I am also using secondary information to study about the company. Data Analysis To bring a solution to Oman Airà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s problem after gathering the information or data I used analysis methods like hypothesis, multivariate analysis and etc. After doing the analysis the research will be completed and will be able to present a solution to the company. Cost and Time When talking about cost Sirius Marketing and Social Research Ltd. is taking Tk 200,000 for doing this resea rch from Oman Air and the company is willing to pay the money to the research company on the basis of the companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s goodwill and another reason for which the company agreed to pay this amount is that it rather than other companies Sirius Marketing and Social Research Ltd. is wanting less money. The research company will do this research within 2 months and this is very convenient for Oman Air. The research company will keep Tk 120,0000 for their company and will use Tk 80,000 for the research. Validity and Reliability of Market Research Validity and Reliability is very important to maintain for research firms. Here I can show validity and reliability of the primary data which is the questionnaire survey for which I gathered photographs of the interviewer and the customers during the questionnaire and secondary source by showing them from where I collected the data. I chose to collect both primary and secondary data cause primary data is most of the time authen tic as it is always collected for known purpose and secondary data are always easy to collect as they are already collected before.
